How I Pack for 7-10 Days in a Carry-On - Beach Addition
Kauai Edition… but this works for any beach trip
If you’ve ever stood at baggage claim waiting for your suitcase while everyone else is already heading to the beach, you know why this matters.
For our recent trip to Kauai, I packed for over a week in a single carry-on. No checked bag. No stress. No waiting.
And this is exactly how I do it.
You can watch the full video here, and I’ve also included the time-lapse of me packing everything into one suitcase so you can see how it actually fits.
Why I Always Choose a Carry-On
First, it saves money. Baggage fees add up quickly, especially when you’re traveling as a family.
Second, lost luggage is more than inconvenient. It can derail the first day or two of your trip. On a beach vacation, that’s the best part.
Third, flexibility. If you need to change flights, fly standby, or make a tight connection, having your bag with you changes everything. You move faster. You stress less. You stay in control.
When you travel often, flexibility becomes part of the lifestyle.
My Simple Carry-On System
Four things make this work.
1. You Actually Have Two Bags
You’re not packing into just one suitcase.
You have your carry-on in the overhead bin and a personal bag under the seat. I use both intentionally.
My under-seat bag holds toiletries, tech, travel essentials, and usually a lightweight change of clothes just in case.
When you think strategically, you realize you have more space than you thought.
2. Shoes Are the Deal Breaker
Most people who struggle to pack light are bringing too many shoes.
Here’s my formula:
Sneakers on your feet for travel
One neutral evening shoe
One versatile daytime sandal
Flip flops
That’s it.
If a pair doesn’t go with multiple outfits, it stays home.
Shoes take up the most space. Be ruthless here.
3. Stick to a Cohesive Color Palette
I avoid big bold prints and random colors.
Instead, I pack mostly solids and pieces that mix easily. When everything works together, you create more outfits with fewer items.
For Kauai, I leaned into neutrals and ocean tones. Everything could mix and match without thinking too hard about it.
This makes getting dressed effortless, which is exactly what you want on vacation.
4. Plan Every Outfit Before You Leave
This is the biggest mistake people make.
They throw things in a suitcase and hope they can create outfits when they get there. That’s how you overpack.
If I’m gone seven nights, I plan seven outfits. I think through dinners, travel days, beach time, and excursions. I know exactly what I’m wearing each day.
When you plan ahead, you don’t need “just in case” extras.
Packing Cubes Are Non-Negotiable
I ALWAYS use packing cubes.
They keep everything compact and organized. They separate categories. They make it easy to unpack quickly. And they help everything actually fit into a carry-on.
Once you start using them, you won’t go back.
Watch Me Pack It All
Here, you can watch the full video where I walk through this step by step.
And make sure you check out the time-lapse of everything going into one suitcase. It’s proof that this system works.
Travel doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to be chaotic. And it definitely doesn’t require overpacking.
Whether it’s Kauai or any beach destination, packing light makes the entire trip smoother.
And when travel feels smooth and repeatable, it becomes something you do often, not something you wait years for.
That’s what BrownGirlTravel is about. Making travel beautiful, smart, and doable.
